While Jane Austen is undoubtedly one of the best known, celebrated and loved authors in the world, most people are not aware that she was perhaps the most famous person to live in Bath since Roman times! But for those in the know, Jane Austen Bath are catch-words that are inextricably linked. For the beautiful Georgian city and spa town was where she lived and worked, gained much of her inspiration, and is recognised as its most famous daughter today.
While her mesmeric novels, such as Pride And Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Emma, Sense And Sensibility and Mansfield Park have become widely known throughout the world, not least through repeated TV adaptations and big-screen film treatments, the life of the authoress is less well known to many, though even that has been the subject of a vehicle for the silver screen in the shape of Becoming Jane.
But for the true story of how Jane Austen came to become one of the central literary figures of the 19th Century (albeit working under a male pseudonym thanks to morals of the day), and for a peek into Jane Austen world, a visit to the Jane Austen Centre in Bath is a must.
The Jane Austen Centre re-creates the domestic environment of a well-to-do household in Regency England, when the country was still reeling from the effects of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the Corn Laws were causing hardship for agricultural and industrial workers alike, political reformist sentiment was in the air, and tumult was never far away, with a series of riots, protests and strikes across the country.
This was the backdrop for Jane Austen’s most feted novels, Jane Austen world as she knew it, albeit from the comfort of her urban residence, the heart of her world in which refined ladies and gentlemen observed the ever-changing world around them.
The Jane Austen Centre features period fixtures and fittings like those that would have been familiar to the writer and her peers, and anyone seeking the real Jane Austen Bath experience should be impressed by the costumed Guides and examples of Jane Austen clothes styles on display, as well as audio-visual exhibits, a well-stocked giftshop, and the Regency Tea Rooms.
An enlightening and fascinating glimpse into one of our greatest artists’ life and times, the Jane Austen Centre is a cultural must-do and a great family day out all year round.
