Charlotte, Emily, Anne and Branwell – The Brontes – are arguably the world’s most famous literary siblings. And Bronte Parsonage, where the family was brought up, is one of the premier sites of pilgrimage for all aficionados of 19th Century literature.
The family resided at the Bronte Parsonage in Haworth, Yorkshire, between 1820 and 1861, during a period of great social change (the 1832 Reform Act, the rise of the Victorian Empire, the 1830 and 1848 Revolutions, the 1851 Great Exhibition, and the Crimean War of 1854-56). The Bronte sisters and their ill-fated brother bore (an alcoholic laudanum user) witness through their literature to all the upheavals that affected their family, society and country, and the Bronte Museum contains examples of their work and period items.
The Bronte museum exhibits at the parsonage focus on the life and works of the Bronte sisters, who penned some of the best-loved classics in English literature, not least Charlotte’s Jane Eyre (1847) and Vilette (1853), Emily’s sole masterwork, Wuthering Heights (1847), and Anne’s The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall (1848). Additionally, the often overlooked works of their father, Revd. Patrick Bronte, and their brother Branwell, are given their due at the Haworth Museum, making a visit to the Bronte Parsonage an enlightening and fascinating must-do for anyone wishing to know the full story behind some of the most famous and cherished story-tellers who ever lived.
